Finance sub-capabilities
Sound familiar?
The problems founders bring our finance operators — and what they walk away with.
Growth, limited by cash flow. We have the demand but the cash is always tied up in inventory.
A cash flow model that shows exactly when money frees up, plus supplier terms negotiated to keep growth funded.
We are struggling to hit profitability. Breaking even YTD due to rising competition and price compression.
The scope
The work our finance operators take on, from first call to ongoing.
Build a rolling forecast that shows how much cash you need over the next few months and when inventory frees it back up.
Pressure-test your CAC, LTV, AOV, and contribution margin down to the SKU level before you scale spend.
Set a real COGS structure and a net margin and EBITDA target that growth can actually sustain.
Map credit lines, debt, and financing options, including using assets and audited financials to fund a deal.
Stand up the budgeting, monthly close, and reconciliation cadence so your finance function can scale with you.
How MentorPass works
Find your expert, book a call, solve your problem — and keep them on when you’re ready.
Browse the ranked list of vetted operators. Every profile shows their track record, the brands they’ve scaled, and exactly what they go deep on.
Pick a time and share your context up front. They review it before you meet — no spending the first 20 minutes on background.
The guide
A finance consultant helps you make money decisions with real numbers behind them. In practice that means building a cash flow model, reviewing your unit economics, rebuilding a P&L, setting a budgeting cadence, or pressure-testing how you would finance a deal. Most founders who come here are not looking for an accountant to close the books. They want an operator who has run a finance function and can tell them whether the fundamentals are sound before they borrow, spend, or scale.
The most common problem we hear is cash. Growth limited by cash flow, money tied up in inventory, a loan that got spent on operations instead of expansion. Close behind it: unit economics that don't add up, and a P&L that says the business is breaking even when it should be profitable. A good finance consultant works on exactly these, and connects the math to the operating decisions that drive it.
Look for someone who has owned a budget, not just modeled one. The difference shows up fast. An operator who has run finance at a real brand gives you specific examples from their own books instead of generic frameworks. Ask what they actually built, what the numbers were, and how a decision played out. If the answers are concrete, you are in the right room.
Fit by stage and industry matters too. A CFO who scaled a CPG brand to an exit sees different risks than one who runs a SaaS model. Match the person to your business. Most finance clients on MentorPass run DTC or ecommerce brands, which is why much of this roster comes from that world.
Most founders can't justify a full-time CFO and don't want to sign a fractional CFO to a monthly retainer for a single question. MentorPass lets you book a real one by the session. The people here have sat in the CFO seat at brands like Onnit and Pet Honesty, run finance and operations at DTC companies like Obvi, and led businesses to 9-figure exits.
They solve problems in the time it takes to have a call. One client came in confused by a cash flow document and left able to use it on their own business. Another pressure-tested a DTC thesis and walked out with the gaps in their thinking named. You bring the question. They bring the experience of having answered it before with their own money on the line.

Ravi was exactly the conversation I needed. I came in trying to pressure-test a business hypothesis in the DTC space and left with the thesis sharpened, the gaps in my thinking named, and a much clearer view of which pieces would land with operators and which wouldn't. What stood out: * He doesn't generalize. When I floated something, he'd give me a real example from his own operations and then push back on the parts that didn't match how mid-market DTC actually behaves. That kind of specificity is rare in a 30-minute call. * He validated the model, not just the problem. A lot of mentors will agree the problem exists; Ravi went further and walked me through which structural pricing/packaging choices would actually feel right to a DTC operator getting pitched — and which ones would get politely ignored. * He gave me honest pushback. When I asked the easy questions, he answered the hard ones. He surfaced reasons a founder wouldn't engage with what I'm building, which was way more useful than another round of affirmation. If you're building anything where DTC operators are the buyer — finance tooling, supply-chain software, vendor-side services — Ravi is one of the highest-signal 30 minutes you can spend. Thanks Ravi.

FAQ
It depends on what you bring. Common sessions cover a cash flow model, a unit economics review, rebuilding your P&L, or pressure-testing financing for a deal. One client came in to understand a cash flow document and left able to apply it to their own business.
You book by the session, so there is no retainer or long contract. You get a real CFO's time for the length of a call instead of paying a fractional CFO every month.
Every person on this list has owned a real P&L. We rank by operating depth and client reviews. Ravi Melwani, for example, holds a perfect rating, and Leon van der Laan has run 20+ sessions.

The session with Leon was incredibly valuable. He is an experienced company and systems builder and is happy to share his learnings. I left with a clear roadmap and will make sure to book another session with him.
Enjoyed the session and learned from the breadth of experience of travis.
I had an incredibly valuable session with Ravi, and I’m genuinely grateful for his time and insights. I came to the session hoping to better understand a cashflow document his company uses, and not only did he walk me through it with great clarity and detail, but he also helped me view it through the lens of my own business. He was a fantastic listener—patient, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in understanding my needs. What really stood out was how open he was about his own business processes, which gave me practical, real-world context that I could apply immediately. His approach was generous and transparent, and he never made me feel rushed. He even welcomed the idea of future sessions, which I truly appreciate. Overall, I left the session with much more clarity and confidence, and I’m looking forward to learning more from him in the future. Highly recommended!

Yes. Several have done it directly. Nomit Shah took Onnit through an acquisition, and others have advised on credit lines, debt, and using a target's assets and audited financials to fund a deal on a tight timeline.
No. Plenty of founders book exactly for this. You can start with the basics: how to read your P&L and balance sheet, set a budgeting cadence, and build the structure you have been missing.
Yes. Many clients rebook. One founder said they left with a clear roadmap and would book Leon again. You can return to the same consultant as your numbers change.
